Page design (interior book design) can be as simple as
setting up margins on all four sides of the page and then loading
text into the empty pages. Many novels have just such a page design--straightforward
and simple, although even a novel should display certain characteristics
that reflect the style and tone of the book.
At the other end of the spectrum might be a college textbook with
full-color illustrations, pages of charts and graphs, headings and
subheadings, "pull" quotes (text taken from the body of
the text and displayed for interest and appearance), bullets, lists,
and boxes of text.
Cookbooks, poetry books, heavily illustrated historical or biographical
books, and technical books on any subject require the most from
your book designer. Be prepared to pay a premium price for a complex
page layout with several layers of subordination and many types
of illustrations. Excellent interior (page) design can go a long
way towards setting your book apart from more ordinary titles.

If
you have illustrations inside your book, REMEMBER:
1. Carefully label photos and artwork. Sequential numbering
throughout the book is the easiest. Sequential numbering within
each chapter is fine as long as you also give the chapter number.
Besides the number, include a word or two for further identification,
especially if you are sending the art files on computer disk
.
2. Always provide underlying numbers for any Excel charts in your
book. Your page designer will probably need to re-create the charts
to conform to typesetting and space requirements in your book.
3. If you send art by disc, scan photos or other art at 300 dpi
and send them as TIFF files in about the same size as they will
be printed in the book.
4. Send original art, not art that has been printed. We can over-ride
the double grid pattern, but it will be sharper and clear if scanned
from original art.
There are many things to consider during the prepress and printing
process, including standard book sizes, page counts, inks, photos,
and more. Dynemar can assist you in your search for a printer, or
recommend a printer who is knowledgeable, reliable, and economically
competitive. Before you start looking for a printer, however, you will need to
know what size of book you will be printing. The standard book sizes
are as follows:
-
-
5.5"
x 8.5" - Tradebook, Handbook, or Fiction
-
6"
x 9" - Handbook, Tradebook, or Fiction
-
7" x 9" - Manual, Textbook
-
7.5"
x 9" - Giftbook, Art Book, Manual
-
8.5"
x 11" - Manual, Textbook
-
9"
x 12+" - Coffee Table Book
These
sizes are categorized according to their most common markets. Sizes
are based on printers buying bulk. Oftentimes clients opt to print
a non -standard size; and though this may be a bit more visually
appealing, prepress and press adjustments cost extra.
Spend some time in the hard cover new release section of your favorite
bookstore. Browse through the books and notice how various page
design elements are used effectively. Don't copy techniques or ask
for them to be included in your book without counsel from an experienced
page designer. The wrong design tool for your book can put your
book's appearance out of synch with its purpose and cost you valuable
sales.
