Your book may have been edited before you send it to us, but we
find very few manuscripts that do not contain at least minor errors.
When the author asks for a lower price because the book has already
been edited, we take that as an editorial challenge. If we do not
spot any obvious errors in the first 5 or 6 pages of the manuscript,
we will discount our services sizably. We will still be on the alert
for typographical or other glitches. Sometimes an author specifies,
"No changes," and we will be happy to comply with that
request if the author signs a waiver. Even then we will usually
point out errors we happen to see in the book.
Spelling,
punctuation, and simple grammar mistakes are corrected first. We
do not mark these changes or ask the author for input. We point
out and correct (if we can) errors of fact, events out of sequence,
inconsistencies in the information provided, major gaps, repeated
information, and other writing problems. Clumsy sentence structure,
reliance on clichés, phrases repeated over and over, excessively
long paragraphs, too many passive verbs, too much indirect speech,
sentence beginning with boring words such as "there" will
be edited. We usually report such changes to the author, especially
if we need to rewrite a sentence or paragraph in order for the meaning
to come through clearly. If the changes are extensive, we provide
you with a page-by-page comparison. Even though we do everything
we can to ensure that our editing suggestions are the best you can
buy anywhere, we realize that it's your book. You can ask us to
restore the text to the way it was written before we edited it.
We'll do it. It's your book.
There are three types of editing that we suggest all written copy
undergo: content editing, copyediting, and proofreading. Content
editing is editing for structure, flow, clarity, usefulness of content,
and written expression. Copyediting is the technical editing of
the writing itself, such as grammar, spelling, etc. Proofreading
is final copy reading of the text in galley form. Proofreading ensures
all edits were made and no new errors were introduced into the manuscript
during the previous editing stages.
