BOOK PACKAGING "Book packaging" is a trade term that includes all the work from the time you submit your manuscript until the completed book arrives at your office or home. Companies that provide editing, page and cover design, printing and binding services are book packagers, publishing consultants, publishers, book producers, or even publishing partners. Our most requested book packaging solutions include:

  • Editing There are three types of editing that we suggest all written copy undergo: content editing, copyediting, and proofreading.

  • Cover Design Your book packager will talk to you, arrange for an appropriate illustration if you don't provide one, ask for specific items such as the ISBN and other items needed for the cover design, and work with you and the cover designer to give you a cover that will please you and improve the chances of a successful book.

  • Page Design Typesetting and the placement of graphs, charts, and other illustrations are probably the most important book packaging services you will receive. Nothing is more disappointing than a book that has been poorly designed.

  • Printing Your book packager may never step inside the printing company that prints and binds your book, but he or she will follow through on all aspects of printing until the book is delivered to you.

  • Book Redesigns We offer layout redesign services for clients interested in changing the overall size or layout of an existing book design. Pricing for interior redesign (layout) starts at $150 for simple redesign concepts. Please contact your sales representative for more information.

WHAT WE CAN DO

There are many good reasons for publishing your own book. These include:
• having ready access to your potential customers;
• having unusual or direct distribution opportunities;
• requiring special attention for a project without broad public appeal;
• a desire to increase profits by taking the publishing risk and so on

If you have decided that you want to take the risk of investing in your own book, you have to do five things:
• work out a budget;
• plan your sales and distribution strategies;
• secure the services of book production experts;
• work out a timetable and marketing plan; and
• contact Dynemar Publishing.

Budgeting

Most books are still sold through bookshops. If this is your proposed method of marketing, you have to allow for the retailer’s margin in your pricing. Other costs to consider are:
• sales and distribution;
• pre-press production;
• editorial;
• creating or scanning illustrations;
• printing; and
• your own profit margin.
Dynemar Publishing can help you work out these figures. Speak to us to obtain quotes or advice.

Sales and distribution strategies

If you don’t plan for this before you start, you will probably make mistakes in your costing. Things to consider are:
• selling: who, how, when;
• warehousing: who, where, how much space;
• order fulfillment: who, how, packing methods, and costs;
• promotions: what kind, who, how; and
• advertising: where, when.
Dynemar Publishing can often direct you to specialists who can supply all of these services to you.

Book production experts

No book can succeed unless it has been professionally edited, designed, and produced. Things to consider are:
• editing and proofreading;
• design;
• images: scanning and illustrating;
• typesetting and layout;
• cover design and production; and
• print management.

HOW TO GET PUBLISHED

Finding a commercial publisher

Commercial publishers do not accept most of the manuscripts sent to them. If your manuscript is accepted you have a much higher chance of success because commercial publishers have the contacts, experience, and sales and distribution services to help your book succeed.

How to select a publisher

Publishers tend to specialize in different genres, so do your research well. Check your local bookseller and library. Look at locally published books. Find ones that are similar to yours and then look on their imprint pages (usually the back of the title page). You will quickly identify a short list of publishers to approach.

How to prepare a submission

Publishers get lots of approaches. To improve your chances of being considered, send only:
• a single sample chapter (not necessarily the first); and
• a self-addressed, pre-stamped return envelope.
• 2 or 3 pages (no more) covering details about you, the book and the market.

What publishers like to know about you:
• Your name, age, gender.
• Your postal and email addresses and telephone and fax numbers.
• Books and articles written, with dates and publishers.
• Your qualifications and experience especially in the field you are writing in.
• The names and addresses of at least two individuals who would be qualified to give an opinion on your work.

What publishers want to know about your book:
• Likely title and sub-title of the book.
• Probable length (book pages, words or manuscript pages).
• Number of illustrations, graphs and tables.
• Whether you have cleared permission for any material taken from other sources.
• Is there a bibliography? appendixes? footnotes/endnotes?
• Has the book been offered to another publisher?
• Contents in as much detail as possible and a description of the scope and aim of the book. For fiction provide a plot precise.
• Why you decided to write the book and why you feel there is a need for it.
• Any key features - new material or approaches.

What publishers want to know about the potential market:
• Identify any trade, professional, and/or library market for your book in as much detail as possible.
• Describe the kind of people (profession if relevant, age, gender, interests, etc) who will buy your book.
• Identify any competing or similar books to yours and describe how your book compares.
• What do you think is the price range for the market envisaged?
• Are there any overseas markets that might be particularly receptive to your book?
• Do you think there is a market for the book in translation? If so, please state likely language.

What to expect

Publishers receive many manuscripts. It can take some time before they even have a chance to consider yours—so don’t expect a quick reply. If the publisher is interested, you will be contacted for more information or a full manuscript. Publishers will be reluctant to offer opinion or comment on your book, except in very exceptional circumstances. They might suggest alternative publishers to approach.
